Within the next few years Department of Defense will require EVERY vendor bidding on contracts to be certified through the CMMC Accreditation Body. Several other agencies are also considering implementing this cybersecurity standard.
Imagine finding the perfect contracting opportunity and not even being allowed to bid on it because your company doesn’t have the proper certification. That will be happening sooner than you think.
For years vendors have been able to self-certify they were meeting NIST 800-171 cybersecurity requirements. The DoD realized those working for prime contractors, or subcontractors failed to adequately adhere to these regulations. Contracting Officers also failed to ensure these requirements were being met, partially because they didn’t have adequate knowledge or tools to do so.
CMMC Certification addresses all of these short comings by creating an ecosystem of third-party assessors to verify all contractors in the Defense Industry Base (DIB) meet Cybersecurity requirements to conduct business with the DoD.
There are currently over 300,000 vendors in the DIB that will need to have an assessment. Like most opportunities those who start early will have a huge advantage over those who delay.
